Sooke

35 km west of Victoria, this quiet, uncrowded community includes Sooke and East Sooke, all bordering Sooke Basin and Sooke Harbour. Both the harbour and basin are well protected from offshore winds providing excellent kayaking opportunities, sheltered boat launch ramps, and moorage. Marina facilities are available as well as cruises, whale watching tours and many fishing charters and guides.

Sooke Spend a day relaxing or exploring French Beach Provincial Park, 59 hectares with beautiful hiking trails that lead you through second growth forest of Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock and Western Red Cedar to the beach. Ideal location for a picnic and strolling along the oceanfront. There are 69 campsites and reservations are accepted as well as some first come first served sites. Pit toilets only and no electrical hook-ups at this campsite.

Sooke has a performing arts group, orchestra, many talented musicians, art galleries and artisan studios. One can take self-guided tours of unique studios that feature everything from funky pottery and glasswork to First Nations art and exotic woodwork.

All Sooke Day, an event famous for its logging sports and salmon barbecue, is held on the third Saturday in July every year. In August, longboat races and other activities such as the Vancouver Island Fine Arts Show take place. This event is held for ten days offering a huge display of exceptional art and a variety of musical recitals presented in a unique setting.

Experience West Coast wilderness at East Sooke Regional Park. Hike along the windswept rocky coast, over dry hilltops, through dark rain forest to sheltered coves. East Sooke is the largest CRD Park encompassing 1422 hectares (3512 acres) of natural and protected coastal landscape. East Sooke's Coast Trail is considered one of the premier day hikes in Canada, a west coast wilderness experience within easy reach of the town of Sooke. The ten kilometer trail is rough and winding, a challenging, 6-hour trip even for experienced hikers.

The Galloping Goose Trail - This is an excellent cycling trail or to explore on foot.

Tugwell Creek Honey Farm, BC's first Meadery offers Mead tastings, as well as high quality products from the bee hives, Wednesday through Sunday 12pm - 4pm.
