Sointula
It is a short ferry trip from Port Mc Neill to Sointula, located along the East coast of
Northern Vancouver Island. Arriving on Sointula is like going back a little in time. The town has a rich
history, and artifacts from the community's colourful past can be found at the Sointula museum, along
with friendly staff to answer any questions. This was originally a Finish settlement, Sointula meaning
"harmony" in Finish, and you can still see that heritage today.
Bicycles can be rented on the island to explore along the Rough Bay - Kaleva Route, 12 kilometres ( 7
miles) long with flat terrain, beach access and spectacular views. A network of logging roads provides
access to other parts of the island as well. Kayak rentals are also available on the island to enjoy
paddling in the protected waters teeming with birds, seals, dolphins and otters.
There is at least one private camping spot and one Government site at Bere Point, available at no
charge. If you're lucky, you could even see the whales rubbing themselves on the rocks, just off of Bere
Point, in the summer. Bere Point Regional Park has a beautiful beach and 8 camp sites with barbecues.
Firewood is usually available, but there is no running water.
There are two trails for moderate hiking. Beautiful Bay Trail is 5 kilometers and winds along a ridge
through a stunning rain forest with periodic glimpses of the sea and coastal mountains. Mateoja Heritage
Trail, is 3.2 kilometers and begins on Third Street. Along this route there are numerous decks and
benches ideal for picnics and bird watchers. This trail is an educational trip through the ecosystems of
Malcolm Island.
Fish for salmon, halibut and cod in the local waters or take a guided sport fishing tour. Charters are also
available for whale watching, diving and photography. If birdwatching is of interest be sure to stop by
Rough Bay, the mud flats are a popular stopping point for a great number of bird species. Browse
through the local art gallery, located near the dock, to see the wonderful displays of the works by
Malcolm Island artists.
Accommodations on Malcolm Island & Sointula range from charming cottages, & bed and breakfasts, to
