Sayward

Sayward The Sayward Valley is located one hour north of Campbell River or two hours south of Port Hardy. Sayward, ringed by majestic mountains, offers diverse recreational activities and excellent bird and wildlife viewing.

Hike the Dalrymple Trail, a self-guided forest interpretation trail which begins 8 km south of Sayward Junction on Highway 19. Rafting, canoeing and kayaking on the Salmon River are popular activities and canoe or kayak rentals are available nearby. Camping is available by the Salmon river, in one of several private sites, and one forest camp maintained by the province. Camping and canoeing also at Rooney Lake or Keta Lake, Boot Lake, Merril Lake, as well as many others all in the Sayward Forest District.

Johnstone Strait is world-renowned for its pods of killer whales, or Orcas. These black and white mammals, are found in the waters near Sayward where kayakers and whale watching charters see them daily.

Sayward The Salmon, White, Adam and Eve Rivers produce large steelhead and good trout fishing. In the fall you can watch a timeless ritual as salmon fight their way upstream to spawn and the bears and eagles wait for easy dining. Watch for majestic Roosevelt Elk; there are four herds in the Sayward area. Observe an abundance of diverse waterfowl at the 52 hectare (128 acre) Salmon River Wildlife Reserve, a haven for wildlife photographers. At the ever changing estuary you can observe water fowl; Giant Herons, Sandhill Cranes, ducks, and other shore/estuary species. See the rare "chocolate lilies" and other local flora.

Visit the Cablehouse Cafe, a unique steel-frame building made entirely of used logging cable. The walls contain 8200 feet of wire rope and the building weighs almost 26 tonnes. Built by Glen Duncan, it opened as a restaurant in 1970.

One hour north is Schoen Lake Park, home to Mt. Cain, a small but popular ski hill for beginners to advanced, in the winter season. Drive to the top and take in the incredible views. There's also a network of hiking trails on Mt. Cain. Rock Bay, 45 minutes south of Sayward, is a lovely drive with a popular swimming beach at McCreight Lake along the way.
