Sayward
The Sayward Valley is located one hour north of Campbell River or two hours south of Port
Hardy. Sayward, ringed by majestic mountains, offers diverse recreational activities and
excellent bird and wildlife viewing.
Hike the Dalrymple Trail, a self-guided forest interpretation trail which begins 8 km south of
Sayward Junction on Highway 19. Rafting, canoeing and kayaking on the Salmon River are
popular activities and canoe or kayak rentals are available nearby. Camping is available by the
Salmon river, in one of several private sites, and one forest camp maintained by the province.
Camping and canoeing also at Rooney Lake or Keta Lake, Boot Lake, Merril Lake, as well as
many others all in the Sayward Forest District.
Johnstone Strait is world-renowned for its pods of killer whales, or Orcas. These black and white
mammals, are found in the waters near Sayward where kayakers and whale watching charters
see them daily.
The Salmon, White, Adam and Eve Rivers produce large steelhead and good trout fishing. In
the fall you can watch a timeless ritual as salmon fight their way upstream to spawn and the
bears and eagles wait for easy dining. Watch for majestic Roosevelt Elk; there are four herds in
the Sayward area. Observe an abundance of diverse waterfowl at the 52 hectare (128 acre)
Salmon River Wildlife Reserve, a haven for wildlife photographers. At the ever changing estuary
you can observe water fowl; Giant Herons, Sandhill Cranes, ducks, and other shore/estuary
species. See the rare "chocolate lilies" and other local flora.
Visit the Cablehouse Cafe, a unique steel-frame building made entirely of used logging cable.
The walls contain 8200 feet of wire rope and the building weighs almost 26 tonnes. Built by
Glen Duncan, it opened as a restaurant in 1970.
One hour north is Schoen Lake Park, home to Mt. Cain, a small but popular ski hill for beginners
to advanced, in the winter season. Drive to the top and take in the incredible views. There's also
a network of hiking trails on Mt. Cain. Rock Bay, 45 minutes south of Sayward, is a lovely drive
with a popular swimming beach at McCreight Lake along the way.
Area businesses include restaurants, lodging, tours and charters. Accommodations include B &
B's, cottages, cabins, campsites and RV Parks.
