Cumberland
Cumberland, where coal was discovered 150 years ago, once boasted one of the largest Asian
populations north of San Francisco. Large Chinese and Japanese communities worked along side
immigrants from Scotland, Hungary and Italy. Cumberland remained an active coal mining town until the
1960's enduring devasting mine explosions and sometimes violent labour disputes. The Cumberland
Museum is filled with artifacts from this colourful era including a replica walk-through coal mine designed
and built by the "old timers" who still live in Cumberland today.
The annual Empire Days' Celebration on the Victoria Day long weekend in May is a worthwhile event to
take in with parade, Maypole dancing and many eateries, pubs, gift shops and galleries to visit as well. In
August the Lemon Tea features historic costumes, treats, and an old-fahioned bake sale. Great music,
dancing and German food await you at Cumberland's Octoberfest.
Comox Lake is a short drive away and offers crystal clear water, perfect for all water activities and a
number of full-service campsites, picnic area and hiking trails.
